Everest Re to post full-year loss on storm losses

Everest Re Group, Ltd. said last night that it expects to post a full-year operating loss as a result of the significant losses that emanated from the record-breaking 2005 Atlantic hurricane season.

The company last night estimated a $230 million loss arising from Hurricane Wilma. The Wilma estimate includes $140 million relating to losses from Mexican exposures with the remaining $160 million relating to Florida exposures.

The company previously estimated losses from Hurricane Katrina totalling $653 million with overall catastrophe losses in the third quarter reaching $785 million.

Everest Re still expects year over year growth in its shareholders equity from $3.7 billion at December 31, 2004 to over $4.0 billion at December 31, 2005.
