FedEx Express fiasco

Mystery surrounds the fate of a truckload of FedEx Express packages that arrived in Bermuda and got lost in transit. At least one package never made it to its intended destination.

And despite the initial claims of FedEx Express public relations officer for Latin America and the Caribbean Kimberley Heimiller that all customers received their packages, one customer - who wants to remain anonymous - said he never received his package and was told by FedEx officials in the US to make a claim for his lost package.

The Royal Gazette understands the problem stemmed from an employee who left the FedEx Serpentine Road depot with a vehicle containing packages to be delivered, but failed to do so and disappeared for several days with the vehicle and the packages inside. It is not known if all of the packages were recovered or if the employee faces any criminal charges.

When questioned on Tuesday, Ms Heimiller said that it was against company policy to comment on employees and insisted that any problem had been rectified.

Saying that all packages are tracked, Ms Heimiller said she was "pretty certain" and it was "most definitely" true that everyone got their packages on time, and that if they did not, they could exercise the company's money back guarantee.

But once confronted with the tracking number, Ms Heimiller would later respond that "FedEx does not condone wrong doing nor actions that are illegal" and that the company had co-operated with the authorities to "bring a resolution".

However, when contacted again yesterday, Ms Heimiller said she could not say whether any other packages had been lost or if any criminal charges were pending against the employee. She could also give no further details of the incident.

Police spokesman Dwayne Caines said he could find no record of the incident and said Police would only get involved if they were asked to by FedEx.

When asked why she had insisted that all packages had been delivered, Ms Heimiller said yesterday: "That was my error. I apologise. That was how I understood the situation and when I investigated it further I was able to confirm that for you that, no that was incorrect."

Efforts to obtain further information about the incident so Police could search their system for details were unsuccessful by presstime.
