Flottl still owns Tucker?s Town home
Austrian financier Wolfgang Flottl, wanted by prosecutors in his home country in connection with allegations that he may have defrauded one of the country?s major banks, continues to own a Bermuda estate, according to Government records.
The former Bermuda businessman is wanted, along with former Refco Inc. chief executive Phillip Bennett, in connection with money loaned to both by the Bank Fuer Arbeit and Wirtschaft AG, which was formerly run by Mr. Flottl?s father, Walter. As of yesterday, an arrest warrant for Mr. Flottl had been requested by Austrian prosecutors but not issued.
Bennett is wanted in connection with a loan made in the days before Refco announced a shortfall. And Mr. Flottl is being sought in connection with an arrangement to finance investment firms run by Mr. Flottl in years past, that resulted in the bank losing more than $1 billion.
Mr. Flottl, who formerly ran a lucrative trading empire from Bermuda, was this week in Manhattan, where he lives with his wife, Anne, grand-daughter of late General Dwight Eisenhower. An Austrian reporter based in New York for Austrian weekly the News, said he spoke with Mr. Flottl outside one of his Manhattan apartments on Tuesday.
A lawyer acting for Mr. Flottl told his client denies any wrongdoing, and had not been been served with an arrest warrant.
While Mr. Flottl continues to be the owner of Bermuda property, it isn?t clear how often he visits. And his Bermuda business empire appears to now be little more than a telephone listing, and a mailbox. His lawyer said he couldn?t speak to Mr. Flottl?s current ties to the Island.
A search of Bermuda land valuation records, which have not been updated since last year, list Mr. Flottl as owner of Castle Point, Tucker?s Town Road, the property he paid $23 million for in the 1990s. A second Tucker?s Town property, Sounion West, once owned by Mr. Flottl, appears to have been sold. Government records list a Julie Jones as the current owner of that property.
Aerial photographs of the Castle Point property ? called Frick?s Point by many locals because it was once owned by wealthy New Yorker Dr. Henry Frick ? from 2003 show the property falling into disrepair.
In the mid-1990?s, Mr. Flottl moved most of his business activities from Bermuda to New York, where he said he was spending more time.
