Greenberg charges not dropped

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer did not drop any charges against former American International Group Inc. executives Maurice (Hank) Greenberg and Howard Smith, a Spitzer spokesman said yesterday, rejecting claims made by the executives' lawyers.

Spitzer spokesman Darren Dopp called "absurd" claims made by lawyers for former chief executive Greenberg and former chief financial officer Smith yesterday that key parts of the civil suit against these individuals had been dropped.

"The core of the complaint and the cause of action remain the same," Dopp said.

The charges that were dropped, he said, were related to AIG as a company. Dopp added these charges were made moot earlier this year when the New York-based insurance giant reached a $1.64 billion settlement with Spitzer.
