A new night life trend in Europe has arrived on Bermuda House Lane.

Guido Esposito has opened Square One, a new lounge / restaurant in the former home of nightclub Blue Juice. The new venue offers food as well as drinks, reflecting the latest trend in Europe where customers want to get everything they want from a single venue.

?The concept is not a restaurant, it is not a bar. It is a restaurant/lounge where you can experience the whole evening,? Mr. Esposito said. ?You go for a cocktail, you can have food there and then you stay for late night which will be music and entertainment. That is what is going on in Europe right now.?

Mr. Esposito has also looked to other trends abroad for inspiration. His snack menu features Tapashi ? sushi and tapas ? which has been big in Rio for several years.

The venue, which has been expanded from the old Blue Juice to include a 1,000 square foot space formerly occupied by a furniture store, was inspired by a group of Italian designers. It includes a public bar featuring stainless steel and retro red furnishings, a couch-lined, smoke free private members lounge and an outdoor courtyard complete with grill.

?The Italian company showed me all of the bars and restaurants they had created and we put together this,? Mr. Esposito said, adding that after removing all of the blue decor he could hardly keep the name Blue Juice. Square One pays heed to the outdoor courtyard.

?It is an outside square like Europe ? let?s all meet at the square. Square One is also let?s start at the beginning, back to square one,? he said.

Mr. Esposito re-opened the five-year-old establishment around the same time that several other venues have come online. Recently on Bermudiana Road, Little Venice Group opened a wine bar while Portofino?s co-owner Simone Maranzana opened up the nightclub Splash. The Lemon Tree and Fairmont Hamilton Princess have also resumed their seasonal Friday evening happy hours.

Mr. Esposito said he welcomed the competition because he believes that Bermuda needs more entertainment.

?A lot of people are travelling and seeing what is going on outside Bermuda, especially young people who come back from school, so we really have to provide them with more than what we have right now,? he said.

?I like competition and I believe the more places we have the better it is. We will encourage people to go out more and then eventually people will fraternise where they fell comfortable.?
