Ingersoll-Rand Q2 profits soar 30%

HAMILTON, Bermuda (Dow Jones/AP) - Ingersoll-Rand Co. Ltd., the maker of Thermo King refrigeration equipment, Schlage locks and Bobcat construction machines, yesterday said second-quarter profit soared 30 percent as revenue surged.

But the Bermuda-based industrial company said it was maintaining a "cautious" outlook heading into the second half of the year. Net income came to $139.3 million, or 81 cents a share, for the latest quarter, compared with $107.4 million, or 63 cents, in the same period a year earlier.

The results beat Wall Street's expectations. The mean estimate of analysts was for second-quarter earnings, excluding items, of 72 cents a share. Revenue rose 11 percent in the latest quarter, to $2.52 billion from $2.27 billion. In morning trading, shares of Ingersoll-Rand climbed $4.28, or 8.8 percent, to $52.85, on the New York Stock Exchange.

Ingersoll-Rand doesn't see "any rapid near-term improvement" in most of its major construction or industrial markets. It expects to earn 70 cents to 75 cents a share in the third quarter, including a loss of 4 cents a share on discontinued operations. Excluding the discontinued operations, the company expects to earn 74 cents to 79 cents a share in the quarter.

Analysts had forecast third-quarter earnings of 68 cents a share.
