Keppel unit wins $143 million oil rig order from Scorpion

(Bloomberg) ? Keppel Corp., the world?s largest maker of shallow-water oil rigs, said its unit won an order to build an oil rig from Scorpion Offshore Ltd. for $143 million.

Keppel AmFELS will deliver the rig, the fifth order from Bermuda-based Scorpion Offshore, in the fourth quarter of 2008, Keppel said in an e-mailed statement today.

Oil prices jumped 37 percent last year to an average $56.70 a barrel, encouraging producers to build rigs and refineries. Keppel last month forecast earnings to grow further for the next two years after racking up a record S$6.5 billion in offshore contracts in 2005. Keppel has won enough orders to keep its yards busy until 2010.

The price of oil for delivery almost five years from now reached a record last week, suggesting producers such as Exxon Mobil Corp. and BP Plc may continue to buy equipment to find and develop new fields. Oil for delivery in December 2010 ended last week at $64.45 a barrel.

Keppel shares rose 1.5 percent to close at S$13.30 before the order announcement. The stock has gained 46 percent in the past 12 months, compared with a 16 percent rise in the key Straits Times Index.
