KeyTech earnings fall

KeyTech Holdings Ltd., owner of Bermuda Telephone Company and Logic Communications, reported reduced profits for the first half of the year.

Key Tech, which is the parent company of BTC and Logic Communications, this week reported a net earnings drop of close to $1.7 million, for the six months ending September 30.

The company - which is also part owner of Cablevision - reported its net income, for the six month period, had fallen to just under $5 million.

Key Tech reported earnings of nearly $6.7 million for the same period last year.

Increased operating expenses and amortisation, along with reduced investment income were said to have attributed to the drop in net income.

Meanwhile, Key Tech chair Dr. James King reported the company is working to bolster its customer service and value.

"The Key Tech subsidiaries have worked hard on improving service and bringing additional value to customers.

"A number of new services have been offered and promoted.

"However, at this stage, we have yet to see a commensurate increase in revenues for the additional expenditures," Dr. King said.

BTC recently launched its Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), to reportedly "strong customer demand".

BTC Mobility claimed to have "improved customer service" with the introduction of its voice-activated service, Wildfire.

BTC Mobility also reported to have advanced its roaming service, but that roaming traffic had fallen after September 11.

Dr. King added that BTC Mobility as a wireless provider, had applied for its own telecommunications license.

"Wireless telecommunications is a rapidly evolving business, and, with its own license, BTC Mobility will be favourably positioned to grow its business," he said.

Key Tech subsidiary Logic Communications also reported "growing its market share", both in the area of dial-up Internet and through its international voice calling services.

Key Tech has also moved in to other markets.

"As Key Tech expands its horizons, it will look to other overseas destinations to leverage its local knowledge base and grow new ventures.

"One such venture has just begun in Curacao.

"Our joint venture in that country offers international voice calling.

"Market share gain has been slower than anticipated but renewed marketing efforts are now underway to grow business," Dr. King said.
