Learning ITon the job

Bermuda's only full service information technology company, CCS, has for the first time this year been able to take on a group of students as summer interns after expanding its group service, according to one of the company's senior consultants.

Trevor Cowan said that they had been able to take on five students to work in the company' group IT section as the company was now under the wings of New Venture Holdings Ltd.

And this company owns, along with CCS, HWP, Elite Electrical, Air Care, and Mechanical Solutions, and CCS is now in charge of looking after the group's computing needs.

"You cannot send a student to a job where you are billing by the hour," said Mr. Cowan. "And you cannot send a student along with a technician as it is perceived the job will take longer. But now we have this group work we can, for the first time, take on students to train."

They now have 400 people under this group, which included the diverse working of the HWP group.

Jason Swan, Dion Steede, Chioke Lodge, Azeem Pitcher and Tristan Richardson were the five technical students given internships this year.

Jason, 19, who worked on group IT and cabling, studies at Niagara College in Canada said: "I've learned quite a bit. I'm glad to say I have never made the coffee - we have learned a lot and it has been great fun."

Dion, 23, studies at New England Institute of Technology. "It is very challenging. You have to make use of your head and think a lot. A lot of times we needed to call for help, but there were always people there you could call,"

Chioke, 25, who is at the New Age University of Alabama and was at CCS last summer, and has helped transfer the workings of the HWP group from Serpentine Road to St. John's Road this summer.

"I had a pretty big project," he said. "I helped move all their computer gear and telephony and had to liase with external bodies like BTC and Logic. It was a huge challenge, but it was great."

All of the students hope to get jobs in IT at the end of their courses.
