Marvell to complete option grants probe

CHICAGO (Bloomberg) ? Bermuda-based Marvell Technology Group Ltd., a maker of chips for Apple Computer Inc.?s iPods, will report third-quarter revenue on November 16, delaying the release of earnings until a probe of stock-option grants is completed.

Separately, MIPS Technologies Inc., a designer of computer chips, said in a regulatory filing yesterday that it faces a lawsuit over alleged options backdating. Mountain View, California-based MIPS reported earlier that its options were under review.

The companies are among at least 150 that have disclosed internal or federal options reviews to determine if grants were misdated. Backdating grants lets them be manipulated to boost their value to employees and other recipients. Some 69 companies plan to or have restated results, taking more than $4 billion from reported earnings to correctly account for stock-based pay.

Marvell, based in Hamilton, Bermuda, and operated from Santa Clara, California, didn?t say in a statement today when its options review may be finished.

Restatements of some earlier financial reports are expected to be made once the review by independent directors is completed, the company said.

The chipmaker also faces lawsuits over its handling of options, and has disclosed investigations into its options grants by both the US Securities and Exchange Commission and Justice Department.
