New tenant sought for Smith?s building
The owners of the HA&E Smith?s building are looking for a new tenant to take over the 33,133 square foot space after Trimingham?s vacates the premises later this summer.
Trimingham?s, which is due to close its doors on July 27, bought out Smith?s retailing business last year but the property itself remained in the hands of Smith?s directors and, in small part, the Bermuda Church Society.
While Trimingham?s has arranged a lease for the property through August, Smith?s directors have now asked realtor Leonard O. Gibbons to accept expressions of interest in the property.
Stephen Kempe, a director for HA&E Smith?s, said the space is prime retail and the directors are interested in establishing interest from the marketplace now. ?Lots of people have expressed interest in it and we?re just trying to firm up the interest,? he said. While the directors hope to rent the whole building on a long-term basis, Mr. Kempe does not discount the possibility that someone may propose knocking the building down to upgrade it. ?I haven?t found anybody yet that has that sort of money. If I do, I will,? he said.
