Orchestrating an inspiring culture

Businesses may not seem to have much in common with a symphony orchestra performing on stage. But just as an orchestra needs to have all of its instrumental sections working together to produce a beautiful sound, a successful business needs to have all of its teams and departments working together towards a common goal.

Businesses may not seem to have much in common with a symphony orchestra performing on stage.

But just as an orchestra needs to have all of its instrumental sections working together to produce a beautiful sound, a successful business needs to have all of its teams and departments working together towards a common goal.

That will be the theme of a seminar being held this week by Bermuda Learning Solutions on creating an inspiring work culture, according to chief executive Pamela Ross Simons.

Ms Ross Simons will be presenting the half day course on Thursday at the Centre For Professional And Career Education (PACE) office at West Hall, Bermuda College.

?Creating an inspiring work culture is about organisations recognising how their individuals and teams ultimately support the entire organisation,? she said.

?The theme for this programme is music because if you think of an orchestra it is like an organisation with different sections which can be translated into departments or teams.?

?We also have an orchestra leader which can be translated into the CEO of the organisation. The leader conducts to make sure all the elements of the band come together to produce beautiful music.?

Ms Ross Simons said the seminar will discuss clarifying and communicating the vision for an entire organisation and how the vision for an organisation has to be translated to the individual departments or teams.

Identifying the values of an organisation is an aspect Ms Ross Simons said affects the culture of an organisation.

?We will talk about the history of an organisation and stories that reflect that history. Most organisations can tell about interactions with clients or customers and stories from staff colleagues which have become legendary in that organisation,? she said.

?When you hire people you want to hire the right people to do the right thing and in sharing some of these stories with the right person you bring them into that organisation?s culture much more quickly.?

She said building the brand will define what a company or team wants to be known for or what sets a company apart from its competitors and what characteristics create trust for customers.

?Your team?s brand is not only the product or service you provide, it is the personality and character of your organisation reflected in words, pictures, images and logos and a reflection of core values.?

Senior learning consultant Naomi Schroter said: ?In our International businesses we have people from many different cultures but we still have to be able to work in a harmonious work place and speak with one voice.?

?The corporate image and values is what brings them all together and we encourage the participants of the workshop to think themselves as a cohesive group and the CEO is the one who brings groups together and encourage them to think as one body.?
