Symposium on risk management to be held here

The Risk Insurance Management Society Inc. (RIMS) and Bermuda?s Insurance Development Council are inviting a small group of risk mangers to an educational symposium in Bermuda this November.

The Bermuda symposium, announced at the annual RIMS conference in Philadelphia yesterday is only the second such event to be organised by RIMS.

It follows a successful session in London last year and precedes plans for similar events elsewhere as RIMS moves to introduce its members to major insurance markets of the world.

Dan Kugler who sits on RIMS programme advisory board and is also assistant treasurer corporate risk management for Snap-On Dealer Insurance Programs said that Bermuda was an obvious choice to follow London.

Although Bermuda has a strong reputation and is highly respected, the symposium organisers take the view that risk managers may not know about all of the Bermuda products and programmes that would assist them in doing their job.

?This is a perfect opportunity to explore what Bermuda offers including what current risk managers expect from Bermuda and also some of the unexpected such as did you know we do these types of products or we can handle your risk a different way.?

RIMS as well as representatives from Bermuda are actively promoting the November 16-18 symposium at this week?s RIMS conference. The symposium will take place in venues around Hamilton including XL House and the Ace Building.

The first two days will feature sessions facilitated by Bermuda based and industry leaders in a bid to guide participants through the basics of entering the market as well as offer more complex specifics on property, liability, captives, casualty and reinsurance. The third day will be set aside for networking.

Like the London event, Mr. Kugler said that the Bermuda symposium will only host a small number of risk managers ? between 40 to 50 to allow interaction within the group.

Mr. Kugler said: ?We want a dialogue, we don?t want a lot of power point presentations. We are looking for speakers that can draw the audience in and get their questions answered.

?A small group allows interaction between the people coming to the symposium, which we think is very valuable. In the London symposium that is what they liked,? he said.
