Waterman's Rock to be cleared
Work is underway to remove a large rock in Hamilton Harbour that will make access to a new marina "easier and safer", according to developers.
An application to the Development Applications Board to remove Waterman's Rock ? which lies just inside of a new boardwalk and relocated petrol station at the Pearman Watlington marina ? was denied last October, but an appeal by the developer was approved at the end of the year.
The rock is now being taken out of the water by heavy equipment.
PW's president William Cox told The Royal Gazette previously that removing the rock would be key to safety and ease of access for mariners trying to refuel at the harbourside Shell petrol station being constructed at the end of the 53-berth marina.
The initial DAB rejection claimed removing the rock could cause environmental damage, specifically damage or destruction of nearby seagrass.
At the time, Mr. Cox said the company had been careful to ensure removing the rock would not cause damage. "The rock is dead it is not a reef that we would be destroying.
"We are very concerned about the environment but we are also concerned about the human factor. Clearing the rock would mean boats would be able to refuel safely and navigate the area," Mr. Cox said.
Mr. Cox was off the Island yesterday and could not be reached for comment, but approval to remove the rock was confirmed by Government.
The marina, which is located in Barr's Bay directly in front of Waterloo House, is the third to be developed in recent years. It follows the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club building its 100-berth marina and the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club marina with 60 berths, at the foot of Hamilton Harbour.
