Yankee Store calls it a day
Yesterday marked the end of an era as the Yankee Store closed down after 91 years of business.
The store was originally opened in 1912 by the Schroder family. For many years, it served as a local Kodak agent and sold a range of goods including camera equipment and jewellery.
The Yankee Store relocated to its Reid Street address about 30 years ago.
With a few left over boxes at his feet, owner Neal Stephens told The Royal Gazette that he felt no remorse closing his doors.
"I am ready," he said. "I'm eight years past retirement."
Mr. Stephens said originally he had not intended for the Yankee Store to close but after a deal to sell the store fell through, he had no choice.
"The buyer could not work out a deal with the landlord so the store was not bought," he said.
While he said his store did well overall, Mr. Stephens admitted his business had not earned a profit in eight years.
"Ever since John Swan announced the referendum, sales dropped," he said. "People got scared and starting leaving the Island."
Mr. Stephens said although his lease officially expires on May 31, he will be set to vacate the property at the end of this month.
"I'll be relieved when I lock the door for the last time. I've work six days a week for so long. I've been working hard."
