Island can boast super-rich connections

Billionaires are abound with interests in Bermuda according to the latest list published by Forbes magazine.

Among one of the top richest people on the World's Billionaires List is New York mayor Michael Bloomberg, 66, who owns a Tucker's Town property. The self-made billionaire, who made his fortune through Bloomberg, is ranked 65th with a net worth of $11.5 billion.

Seventy-seven-year-old Edward Johnson III, who has a home in Somerset, comes in at number 77, with a fortune totalling $10 billion. Mr. Johnson's money was made through Fidelity Investments, America's largest mutual finance company.

Hot on his heels is 71-year-old three-times former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, who drops 39 places to 90th. His family owns the Blue Horizons property, also in Tucker's Town, and Mr. Berlusconi, who also has an interest in 2007 European Champions League winners AC Milan, boasts a value of $9.4 billion.

Sixty-three-year-old Norwegian shipping magnate John Fredriksen, who has $8 billion to his name, was at 113th, following the success of his Bermuda-based shipping company Frontline Ltd.

Curt Englehorn, 81, who owns Five Star Island, occupied 142nd slot, with a fortune of $6.6 billion. Tucker's Town property owner Ross Perot, 77, who ran unsuccessfully in two US general elections, holds 247th position with a $4.3 billion fortune.

Bermuda resident Ernest Stempel, 91, who worked for AIG from 1938 and later became its president, is 897th, with a net worth of $1.3 billion.
