WASHINGTON (Bloomberg) — Continental Airlines Inc. and US Airways Group Inc. raised round-trip fares by as much as $10, matching increases made by UAL Corp.’s United Airlines and other large US carriers in this year’s first general fare boost.Continental, the fourth-largest US carrier, changed its fares yesterday, spokeswoman Mary Clark said. US Airways matched prices with United, AMR Corp.’s American Airlines, Delta Air Lines Inc. and Northwest Airlines Corp., although not in every market, spokesman Phil Gee said.
Major US airlines implemented at least 10 broad fare increases last year to help offset rising fuel costs. The latest rises follow a 16 percent drop in the average price of jet fuel for immediate delivery in New York Harbour since December 1.
Continental filed 36,723 fare increases last night, while US Airways filed 13,771 increases, Neil Bainton of FareCompare.com said in an e-mail.
JetBlue Airways Corp. has said it was evaluating the changes.
