Caribbean telecoms conference starts

The future of telecommunications in Bermuda is set to be discussed by the Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU) at its 18th annual executive council held at the Elbow Beach Hotel today.

The CTU will also be hosting its fifth Caribbean Ministerial Strategic Seminar on Thursday February 28 and Friday February 29 at the hotel, kicking-off with a number of sessions under the title 'The Caribbean through Global Lens', including the opening remarks, challenges and the need for collective action, and International Telecommunications Union: ICT and small state development.

The rest of the morning is made up of 15-minute seminars themed on 'A Region In Peril?', such as the new tourism: challenges of the changing environment, the new 'e'-conomy, the increasing knowledge gap, security conundrum: global village - porous boundaries, environment: the fragile asset and consequence of inaction.

Bermuda will be the focus after lunch with a regional case study on the Island, as well as Jamaica and Antigua, followed by a ministerial caucus: participant blueprint, featuring inter-ministerial collaboration, stakeholder engagement strategy, inter-regional collaboration and working with regulators.

The second day opens with a series of Government and non-Government consensuses, before moving into the aptly-named 'The Connected World' subject matter, consisting of trends and imperatives, and spectrum and policy harmonisation.

"Regulatory and Policy Impact on ICT Adoption', including evolving the Caribbean regulatory environment, a presentation of CCI, the role of Government in advancing ICT (Singapore), further ministerial caucuses, consensuses, and closing remarks make up the remainder of the day.
