Carmakers fail to halt carbon laws
SAN FRANCISCO (Bloomberg) - General Motors Corp., Toyota Motor Co. and other carmakers lost another bid to halt California rules requiring cuts in carbon emissions linked to global warming that have been adopted by at least 11 other states.
US District Judge Anthony Ishii in Fresno, California, ruling yesterday in the carmakers' lawsuit challenging the reductions, rejected arguments that California's regulations interfered with the federal government's power to set fuel economy standards and its ability to forge global policies on climate change.
"There is absolutely no reason in logic that the efforts of California or any other state to reduce greenhouse gas emissions would interfere with efforts by the executive branch to negotiate with other nations to do the same," Mr. Ishii said.
Greg Martin, a GM spokesman, declined to comment on the ruling.
