CSB: Cost of broadband still high in Bermuda
Bermuda's broadband users are still paying much more than those from other parts of the world.
That is according to the latest report by the Computer Society of Bermuda (CSB), which reveals that subscribers in the US are getting better value for money than their Bermuda counterparts.
Yesterday, the 50 Megabit speed service was rolled out across the US at a cost of $150 per month, offering significantly improved value compared to the Island's 2 Meg service, which comes in at $138.95 per month, said the CSB.
Even the lower speed services available in the US cost less than those in Bermuda, with the 8 Meg service setting users back $53 and 6 Megs $43 in the US, while the 256k speed service is $108.95 and the 128k costs $68.95 in Bermuda.
Comcast announced plans to introduce the Docsis 3.0 broadband service, which offers download speeds of up to 50 Megs and upload speeds of 5 Megs, in the Minneapolis-St. Paul region, at a price of $150 per month for residential users and $200 for business customers.
The company, which has 13.2 million Internet customers, plans to offer wideband to 20 percent of the 49 million homes in its service areas this year and 100 percent by the middle of 2010, according to Mitch Bowling, Comcast's high-speed Internet general manager.
