VybezAlliance website tops a million hits in first year
With its first anniversary around the corner, Bermuda's only online TV channel, VybezAlliance, is celebrating one million visits to its site.
Started on April 15, 2007, by Qian Dickinson, 28, and Phil Davis, 30, the only company with a "dot TV" domain name on the Island is blooming into a one-stop shop for hip youngsters.
And the men are prepared for the coming wave of online advertising they believe Bermuda has yet to experience.
They have taken the best aspects of Myspace and YouTube and combined it with their Bermudian flare to create a site which informs, showcases and connects people aged 18 to 34.
Currently 1,400 people are members of the site and provide the content, be it streaming video, music, photos and personal pages, which have a similar format to Myspace. But non-members also stop by, particularly to listen into its weekly radio show, with DJs in Florida and Toronto. And the popularity has extended beyond Bermuda's borders.
"Because Bermudians travel a lot and go to university abroad a lot of our listeners are sitting in dorm rooms across North America and the UK," Mr. Dickinson said. "We've had requests from people in Russia during our radio shows."
VybezAlliance began as the two men sat in the Bank of Bermuda working on the company's website redevelopment. They would discuss their weekend activities and the lack of outlets for creative people on the Island.
"I started with a smaller idea and was talking to Phil everyday about how I could expand it," Mr. Dickinson said. "I have the IT background but he has the marketing background. At first I thought he would work for me on a contract basis but then the idea grew and grew and we realised we had to be partners.
"I don't regret it, working for myself is something I have always dreamed of. There is a different level of passion when it's your dream and your company that you are working on every day."
They decided to approach the website as consumers as well as producers and built it around what they would like to see and what would be convenient for them. That is why you can scan party pictures while a side panel has a constant feed from Bermuda Network News. Members are also able to upload videos from YouTube along with their own videos, something that appeals to aspiring artists who have added songs they have written to their profiles.
The biggest challenge during the first year has been "being young Bermudian men" because some prospective advertisers tend not to take them seriously.
"But I think we have shown that this is only the beginning and we will continue to grow," Mr. Dickinson said. "The election was a very good period for us — both the PLP and UBP advertised with us. Gosling's is one of our major sponsors and we have been doing some stuff for Tech Week."
