Bank trust to give out $3.7 million

The Bank of Bermuda's Centennial Trust is set to pump $3.7 million into local charities this year -- increasing its ten-year tally by half.

The Trust was started on the 100th anniversary of the founding of the bank and this year the money will be distributed to 21 local charities and organisations.

These recipients include the Bermuda Educational Assistance Trust for its special education programme, Riding for the Disabled, the Devonshire and Westmeath Rest Homes, the Bermuda National Gallery, and the St. David's Island Historical Society.

Other recipients include the Bermuda Red Cross for an equipment building, the SPCA for renovation of its dog runs, Saltus Grammar School for an art room, and the Old Elliott School Trust for restoration of its historic school.

Since 1989 The Centennial Trust has granted more than $6 million for projects of long-term benefit to Bermuda and its people.

Just four years ago the total was $3.5 million.

David Lang, representing the trustees of the Bermuda Trust Company, said: "There are many worthwhile causes in Bermuda. There are specific areas that we try to aim at aiding.

"The selected charities and organisations reflect the trust's commitment to Bermuda's culture, history, physical environment, social well being, and its youth,'' Mr. Lang added.

The Trust tends to support new organisations or new projects from old, but influential organisations.

"The Centennial Trust is unique in Bermuda in that it was founded, and staffed by Bermudians,'' Mr. Lang said. "We take the lead and others follow.'' Projects are considered by the Trust if they are dedicated to causes that are non-profit or charitable and are significant and non-recurring. The donations are normally in excess of $25,000.
