Par-La-Ville Road based Business Systems Limited (BSL) is opening its desktop products group on September 1. Mr. DeRoy Butterfield has been recruited as the BSL's commodity group manager.

"Competition is fierce in Bermuda,'' said Mr. Butterfield. "We don't want to appear to be a high faluting retail outlet. We are adapting the idea of the US computer warehouse.

"There will be no demonstration room as local businesses and the community are now more computer literate. Most clients come to us knowing what they want. To them, a computer is no longer a mysterious box. ,'' he said.

Although BSL will not reveal individual clients, they are said to range from the international banking industry to the retail market.

The desktop products group will supply Dell, Digital and NCR hardware products and general application software, including word processing spreadsheets and database software.

"Local business and other computer users are aware that the pricing of PCs has been higher in Bermuda than in the US. We are trying to market hardware and software so we compete with the American eastern seaboard, and not just local distributors.'' "We want to encourage purchasing in Bermuda rather than the US,'' he said.

Mr. Butterfield said service costs like installation or reconfiguration would be individually priced, rather than built into the hardware price as a hidden cost.

BSL was set up in 1983 and now employs 40 staff. It is the sole distributor for Digital Equipment Corporation and NCR in Bermuda.
