Burgess puts stop to adults-only cruise

An adult-only cruise party with erotic dancers and `spicy games' has been halted by the Government.

Flyers advertised the `Nice and Naughty Adults Only! Scandal Re-union Cruise' featuring the dancers and games, gambling, `pulsing' music and `fun' contests.

They also said $2,000 in cash "was up for grabs'' with "free drinks all night'' on board the M.V. Canima, a Government-leased vessel, for $55 in advance or $65 at the boat.

The show was being organised by Mr. Al Eastmond, a former manager of the Scandal nighclub, but yesterday it was stopped from going ahead by the Government.

In April 1992, Mr. Eastmond, then manager of the Scandal nightclub on Front Street, was fined $300 at Magistrates Court for knowingly exhibiting an indecent performance in a public place.

The owners, Inter-Rest Management Ltd were also fined $300. The club, which suffered financial problems, has since closed.

Transport Minister, the Hon. Maxwell Burgess, said: "I am aware of flyers which indicate that someone is attempting to organise a cruise.

"The Government will not allow a cruise to proceed where gambling is expected to take place.

"Based on the poster I have seen, there is no need to worry whether or not a cruise of that nature will be allowed to take place. The Government will not allow it to happen.'' The posters said tickets for the cruise were available from Carousel Liquors, Pizza Dudes and Freeport Gardens.

Mr. Edgar Ward, Carousel owner, said he was asked by Mr. Eastmond to sell some tickets. "I have not sold one and I do not intend to sell one,'' said Mr.

Ward.

At Freeport Gardens, a spokesman said although he knew Mr. Eastmond, he had not been approached to sell tickets. No-one was available for comment from Pizza Dudes.

Officials at the Transport Department were contacted by the Police last Monday, drawing their attention to the content of the poster and specifically the gambling.

Under the contract required to hire the M.V. Canima , no gambling is permitted and Mr. Eastmond was sent a letter on Wednesday stating the party would not be allowed to go ahead.

The cruise was due to take place on July 7, but the posters caused an uproar prompting one person to write to Mr. Burgess urging him to ban the trip.

The letter says: "These disgusting and tasteless flyers are circulating Bermuda advertising a night of gambling, debauchery and pornography on board the Canima.

"I hope that you (Mr. Burgess) do the right, proper and moral thing and see that Government property is not abused in this manner.

"The entire population of Bermuda taxpayers will revolt if this behaviour is seen to be condoned by Government.'' Last night, when approached, Mr. Eastmond said: "I do not speak to The Royal Gazette .''
