Casling to open new `fun concept' deli/variety store

Catering to the on-the-go demands of the modern Bermudian workforce, businessman John Casling is promising a fresh new concept at one of his Front Street locations.

Shifting his retail focus from the tourist trade to the local consumer, Mr.

Casling revealed that he will be opening Buds, Beans & Books on the corner of Par-La-Ville Road and Front Street around the end of the month.

As the name suggests the new concept shop will sell a wide variety of products ranging from flowers, to food to best selling books.

Strictly a grab and go operation, Mr. Casling said he anticipates the shop will do a fast paced high volume business.

"We are going to have food in the back section,'' he said.

"We'll have gourmet coffees, deli sandwiches, specialty salads and pastries and it will be completely self service from refrigerated units.'' "The area has quite a lot of office buildings and we will cater to those who don't want to wait.

"They'll just come in, grab something quickly and go,'' he added.

A wide selection of magazines and paper back books will be in the same store, as well as cards, gift wrapping paper, specialty balloons, office supplies and flowers.

Plans are also in the works for the store to offer napkin engraving.

"We will not really be competing with florists and will not be doing bouquets,'' Mr. Casling noted, "but you will be able to come in and buy a bunch of flowers, or a few roses at competitive prices.'' "This is a really fun concept and will be a dynamite operation. We plan to open seven days a week and will close at 10 at night,'' he said. Excited about the project Mr. Casling who also owns Front Street shop Smugglers Reef and originally operated a T-shirt shop out of what will now be Buds, Beans, & Books, conceded that the fall in tourists coming to the Island drove him to come up with new ways to serve the local market.

"Tourism being what it is, it is time to change,'' he said.

"This will be a store where a man can run in, quickly grab a bunch of flowers and a card to take home to his wife.'' . . . NEW SPOT FOR TRIANGLES BUC ...New spot for Triangles The clientele of the European style retail store Triangles much prefer the smaller locale the shop is now in.

This according to owner John Casling who moved the operation from the 1,800 square foot space at the corner of Par-La-Ville Road and Front Street to 1,500 square feet on Queen Street.

Knocking down suggestions that the specialty retail outlet which carries French designer labels like Versace and Dior, had run into difficulty, Mr.

Casling noted that the business "has a very faithful clientele.'' "We bring in clothes from Europe which have a younger look and have always had a very faithful clientele,'' he insisted.

"By no means is the business doing badly we just moved it up the street a bit.'' The new move sees Triangles tucked between the Irish Linen Shop and the Bermuda Book Store in a setting Mr. Casling describes as "more quaint and better suited to the shop's image.'' "It was our intent for some time to have Triangles in that space, it feels right and it looks right,'' he said.

"The other location was too much of a fish bowl, the new store looks fantastic and the reaction from our clients has been great.''
