NDC members return from Martinique
sharing local substance abuse data with several Caribbean islands.
Research officer Derrick Binns and Treatment Coordinator Lynda Price represented Bermuda at the First Caribbean Conference on Drug Abuse in Martinque.
Dr. Binns presented a paper on the extent of the substance abuse problems in Bermuda in addition to submitting information from the NDC's high school surveys and adult population survey.
Dr. Price spoke about local efforts to develop an integrated addiction treatment system that would provide a complete care for those in need of help.
According to Dr. Binns, Dr. Price's presentation sparked a number of requests for further information on Bermuda's treatment approach.
Dr. Binns said few islands had a problem with heroin, unlike Bermuda which has a long history of heroin abuse. But he said that all the islands shared a common factor, that alcohol was the most prevalent drug.
