number is finally abolished.

For the last year two codes -- 809 and 441 -- have been running in parallel with `phone users able to reach Bermuda using either number.

But from today the 809 international dialling code will no longer be used with people ringing the old number having calls intercepted by a recorded message telling of the change.

Yesterday John Instone, a spokesman for Cable and Wireless, said up to about two weeks ago more than 90 percent of calls coming to Bermuda were using the 441 number.

Some problems still remained with facsimile machines which were programmed with the old 809 number and some small telephone companies around the world had not yet switched their equipment to use the 441 number.

He said other countries around the world were changing international dialling codes as a proliferation in telephone users meant systems needed up-dating.

"At first the take-up was a bit slow, but now the vast majority of overseas callers are using the new number,'' said Mr. Instone.

"We think some people have not programmed their fax machines to the new number, but up to about two weeks ago the overall take-up was more than 90 percent.'' He added: "The major telephone carriers have made the necessary up-grades, but if people are still aware of problems where people cannot dial using 441 they should contact us.''
