ACE sets up Joell academic fund

from the newly- established Madeline Joell Nest Egg Fund for the 1999-2000 school year.

The fund, established in memory of Madeline Joell, an ACE marketing executive who died suddenly last year, provides up to $10,000 a year for five years to primary schools for programmes that contribute to academic excellence.

Schools receiving funding are: Elliot Primary School Francis Patton School Gilbert Institute Paget Primary School Somerset Primary School Southampton Glebe School St. David's Primary School West Pembroke Primary School President and Chief Executive Officer of ACE Bermuda Gary Schmalzriedt said the programmes to be funded this year by the Nest Egg Fund focus on improving reading skills: "Most of the schools have requested funding for the Reading Counts programme, which we understand is an excellent supplement to the Literacy Place curriculum which the Ministry of Education is introducing throughout the primary school system this year. Mr. Schmalzriedt said that the committee overseeing the Fund was made up of representatives from ACE, the ACE Foundation and the Ministry of Education.
