Airport reopened for business this morning.

During last night's Emergency Measures Organisation meeting Government announced the Airport would re-open for operations at midnight last night.

All of the reservation and information departments of the airlines serving the Island from North America were last night reporting their flights were scheduled to take off today.

Continental Airlines, Air Canada, American Airlines, Delta, and US Airways all reported no cancellations for today.

A British Airways spokeswoman said a decision would be made today on whether to lay on an extra flight today or wait for the regularly scheduled Thursday flight from London.

Director of Airport Operations Lester Nelson said the facility had come through Hurricane Gert unscathed and early concerns about the Castle Harbour foreshore were unfounded.

"We weren't affected at all,'' Mr. Nelson said. "The last time we were concerned with the wave action. But the foreshore held up well.'' Mr. Nelson added the Airport closed Monday night as a precaution for staff who might have to make a treacherous drive across the Causeway or the Swing Bridge.

"The Airport was not necessarily preventing anyone from landing,'' he said.

"It was an operational necessity. Technically we could open now if anyone wanted to land.'' Mr. Nelson added that based on the forecasted wind speed and direction, he expected airlines to operate a full schedule today.
