BBSR's Hansell moving up
promoted to Senior Research Scientist.
Dennis Hansell was promoted by the BBSR Board of Trustees, with the blessings of BBSR director Tony Knap, following a review of his work by leading international ocean scientists.
Dr. Hansell is the third BBSR scientist to be promoted to the senior rank and he follows in the footsteps of Clay Cook and Dr. Knap, who noted: "This is a major accomplishment and represents Dr. Hansell's high standing in the international science community as the promotional process is external to BBSR.
"This is a major step in a scientific career.'' Dr. Hansell received a Ph.D. in Oceanogaphy in 1989 from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks.
He joined BBSR in 1992 following postdoctoral positions at the University of California Santa Cruz and the University of Washington.
His research programme investigates the carbon and nitrogen cycles in the global ocean, research that has taken him and his group to many of the world's oceans.
He is involved in US national and international programmes focussed on these subjects and has authored 23 peer-reviewed papers.
Dr. Hansell is active in supporting the BBSR Marine Operations Department, including the RV Weatherbird II , as well as serving on the US UNOLS council -- a committee which oversees the US academic research fleet.
He serves on the executive committee of the Bermuda Zoological Society and has provided scientific advice during development of the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute.
He also served on the Aquaculture Subcommittee for the Bermuda Commission on Competitiveness.
