Bermuda lawyer to speak at conference in Oman
conference in the Sultanate of Oman.
Mrs. Lynda Milligan-Whyte, a senior partner in Hamilton law firm Milligan-Whyte & Smith, will talk about investor protection regulations at a conference entitled "The Investment Horizon in the Sultanate of Oman,'' scheduled for December 4 to 7 in the Oman capital of Muscat.
Mrs. Milligan-Whyte, who also sits on the council of the Bermuda Stock Exchange and whose firm is active in business law, will deliver her presentation as part of the programme on December 5. She is one of the few Bermudians ever allowed into Oman, a country where one has to be invited to visit. They do not allow in the curious or anyone else, unless sanctioned by officialdom.
Mrs. Milligan-Whyte was first in Oman on a marketing trip about a year ago, where she was presented by Bermuda Commercial Bank Chairman Mr. John Deuss.
"Mr. Deuss introduced me to a number of key business people in Oman, one of whom was the chairman of the securities market. After making a presentation on Bermuda to him, he asked me to participate in the first conference of its kind in Oman, basically designed to attract foreign investment,'' she said.
The investment gathering is being organised by the Muscat Securities Market in association with the Career Development Foundation of Oman and is designed to highlight investment potential there to international investors.
Sultan Qaboos Bin Said and the Oman Government give high priority to economic development and fully support the conference in the hope that it will encourage foreign investments.
"My speech will centre around the need to give guarantees to foreign investors. I will speak about how various jurisdictions have handled regulations regarding foreign investment. I will look at Canada, the US and Bermuda as examples,'' Mrs. Milligan-Whyte said.
Milligan-Whyte and Smith will be the only law firm represented.
Others included on the high-powered panel include representatives from KPMG Peat Marwick, Merrill Lynch, Ernst & Young, Templeton Investment Management, International Finance Corporation, The International Organisation of Securities Commission and Meed UK, as well as experts from Oman.
The conference is expected to draw investors, entrepreneurs, business people, financial institutions and management and brokerage firms from the international investment market.
Instant translation in both English and Arabic will be available throughout the conference.
