Saltus' end of year activities will include honorary programmes for Mr.

ARTISTS RUB SHOULDERS WITH PREMIER ART Artists rub shoulders with Premier Members of the arts and business communities had the chance to mix and mingle at a reception for the arts hosted by Premier Jennifer Smith at Camden.

The evening was attended by artists of all mediums -- such as writer Rawle Frederick and visual artist Bruce Stewart.

Painter and sculptor Manuel Palacio arrived following the opening of Tamell Simons' photography exhibit at the Masterworks Gallery and said he was pleased to see such a good showing.

"There's a beautiful mix of people and I'm glad the Premier puts this together every year -- but they also need to update the mailing list,'' he said.

"The arts are growing by leaps and bounds, and the cultural affairs community needs to keep in contact with more of the new artists coming along -- for instance, avant garde people like Andre Simons who is the most talented artist on the Island,'' he added.

WORK TO BEGIN ON RAILWAY TRAIL GVT Work to begin on Railway Trail Work to repair a collapsing rock face, which forced a section of the Southampton Railway Trail to be closed 18 months ago, will begin next week.

The Works and Engineering Ministry last week invited tender bids to build a tunnel on the section of trail opposite Five Star Island.

In October, 1998, temporary barricades were erected on the short stretch of the trail because the cliff face was collapsing and Government promised to fix the problem.

The repair work was delayed until this year's budget.

Because the cliff face was found to be severely eroded, workers will not be able to reface as they did a cliff face on Palmetto Road.

Instead, the area will be excavated and a foundation will be built by Works and Engineering personnel, with work beginning June 6, in preparation for the building of the tunnel.

An invitation to tender was advertised this week for contractors to bid for the project to build concrete block walls and reinforced concrete suspended slabs.

The 60-foot-tunnel's roof will be filled in. The entire project is expected to take at least two months.
