Decision on second Delta flight still up in the air Tim Greenfield

No decision has yet been made on the future of Bermuda's second new flight that started this year.

Delta Airlines have been running an extra flight out of Atlanta this summer and yesterday the airline confirmed that it would be several months before it decided whether the service would re-start next year.

The flight, which was the second new service to the Island along with the recently abandoned TWA St. Louis route, ran later in the day from Atlanta to hook up with worldwide connections to the hub.

But, unlike the poorly supported TWA flight, Delta said their flight has been successful so far this season.

Spokesman Todd Clay said: "We have been very pleased with the results of running the service. This is too far ahead to commit an aircraft, that doesn't mean we are not going to. It is too early to decide.

"That decision won't be made until early next year.'' Earlier this week, Tourism Minister David Allen announced TWA were dropping the twice-weekly mid-west service weeks before it was due to finish and were not planning on running it next year.

Despite extensive marketing support and a promotional blitz in the mid west, the flight failed to deliver. It returned poor numbers and some flights had less than 30 people on board.

The Delta Atlanta service, which runs until the end of October, has been more of a hit, not least because of its timing. It arrives in Bermuda late afternoon and returns the following morning, allowing connections from the west coast of America and around the world.
