Irish Consul appointed
Commonwealth Office in London, the Government of Ireland has appointed John Kane as its Honorary Consul in Bermuda.
Mr. Kane said: "As you know, there are a fair number of Bermuda-based companies in Dublin and there is quite a large community of Irish people in Bermuda at the moment.'' And he said his position was in essence to represent the Irish on the Island and liaise between the two countries and to let people in Dublin know what is going on in Bermuda, and vice-versa, both financially and socially.
Mr. Kane has been a Bermuda resident since 1971 and in the mid-1980s was involved in promoting the benefits of establishing a presence in the International Financial Services Centre in Dublin where a number of Bermuda-based companies now have subsidiaries.
