Monkman to head up TCD
Department (TCD) just before an overhaul of the entire department.
At a press conference yesterday, Transport Minister Dr. Ewart Brown said this appointment continues a career in Government that began in 1976 when Mr.
Monkman was a summer student at the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries.
Mr. Monkman rose through the ranks and became Plant Protection Officer, Senior Plant Protection Officer, and most recently Assistant Director of Agriculture and Fisheries, a post he has held for six years.
Dr. Brown said: "Kevin's climb through Agriculture and Fisheries is an example of the unlimited opportunities available to young Bermudians who are prepared to acquire the education, training and experience necessary to take them to the top.
"It is a primary focus for Government in this new millennium to develop young people within the service and to make Government an employer of choice for young Bermudians who have not yet joined the service.'' Mr. Monkman thanked the Minister and said: "I look forward to working with all staff and clients at TCD but will miss all those at Agriculture and Fisheries.'' Mr. Monkman took advantage of Government's two-year Senior Management Development Programme in 1997.
Shortly after he was seconded to the Ministry of Transport Headquarters for nine months and worked closely with the staff at the Transport Control Department, obtaining an insight into the administration requirements of that department.
He was then seconded to the Registry General for six months and returned to Agriculture and Fisheries as Assistant Director at the beginning of this year.
In addition to his administrative experience, for the past six years, Mr.
Monkman has been part of the Government Team for Bermuda Industrial Union negotiations.
Dr. Brown said: "With his training, management skills and his dedication to excellence, Kevin will be a great asset to TCD and the Ministry of Transport.
He takes up his position at TCD on Monday November 27, and I am pleased to welcome him aboard.'' Mr. Monkman replaces Acting Director Ianthia Wade who Dr. Brown said had done an excellent job after Director Donald Dane stepped down form the post in August.
The Director of TCD -- with a salary of $100,000 -- is responsible for examination, registration, and licensing of motor vehicles and drivers under the law.
Driving force: Transport Minister Dr. Ewart Brown congratulates Kevin Monkman, who will take over the reins as Director of the Transport Control Department within the next two weeks.
