replace Leonard (Shinah) Simons.

Mr. Simons' assistant Jeffrey Benevides will now report directly to the Government Veterinarian and will enforce all aspects of dog legislation.

Other responsibilities include giving evidence in court, capturing dogs and giving lectures in the Island's schools and community.

Mr. Benevides, 29, was appointed on Monday and said last night Mr. Simons would be a hard person to follow.

He first began working in the department in 1990 as a part-time assistant warden to Mr. Simons who was the only person in the department.

A former Police cadet, Mr. Benevides received his education at Mount Saint Agnes Academy.

By 1993, Government had formalised the position of assistant dog warden, making it a full-time position with a salary.

Mr. Simons left the post this summer to become the chief truant officer for the Ministry of Education.

Acting director of Agriculture and Fisheries, Jack Ward said everyone in the Ministry was pleased at the promotion.

"It's always really nice when you promote from within,'' Mr. Ward said. "It sends a message throughout the organisation. He's got the skills. We're now advertising within Government for his old position.''
