Peer leaders begin training
their peers began yesterday.
The seminar, hosted by the Ministries of Health and Social Services and Education, will train 25 students from Berkeley Institute, Warwick Academy, and Whitney Institute to become "positive, effective, peer leaders'' at their respective schools.
Peer leaders, which are common in North American schools, provide support and assistance to students who may not feel comfortable talking with adults about their problems.
The peer leaders are supported by school counsellors.
Government health co-ordinator Mrs. Ivena Laurenceo said school counsellors would take part in a training workshop tomorrow.
The seminar, which began yesterday and finishes tomorrow, is being held at Clear View guest house in Hamilton Parish.
The students, who were chosen by their peers to be leaders, are staying at the guest house throughout the seminar.
