The decision was made at the organisation's board meeting in San Diego on October 9.

Mrs. Smith Gordon has been a member of the Board of the WHHO since its inception in Bermuda in 1993 when a steering committee was formed with representatives from nine countries -- Bermuda, USA, Canada, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Australia, France, Holland and Belgium.

Three years later Mrs. Smith Gordon became vice chairman and served in that capacity until her recent appointment.

WHHO is a collection of global leaders and organisations who established an international network of patients, providers, practitioners and associations to raise awareness and quality of home care and hospice on a global level.

It also provides for information sharing, education, professional exchanges and technology updates.

In May, 2000, WHHO will join hands with The European Association for Care and Help at Home (EACH) to host the Second World Congress on Home Care and Hospice in Vienna.

To date, 55 countries have expressed an interest in attending the event which will seek to promote a higher-performing, top quality home care provision to help forge closer ties with partners from other sectors, patients and clients and help foster innovation and suitable adapted research projects.
