Somers Isle still adrift off Florida

A Meyer Agencies spokesman said the ship broke down near its Florida destination after it left Bermuda on February 6.

A tug from Fernandina Beach was sent out to tow the ship in. But it also developed mechanical problems and was forced to return to port.

A second tug was sent out a few days later and was expected to reach the Somers Isles by today.

Meyer Agencies projected that the ship will be towed to Fernandina Beach next Wednesday and reach Bermuda on February 26.

It also reported that the Bermuda Islander arrived from Salem, New Jersey last Saturday with 96 containers, including eight refrigerated containers. It also brought in two trucks.

The ship, which was behind schedule, sailed back to New Jersey that afternoon.

The Saudi Arabian-registered tug Misfah No. 9 -- which was travelling from Miami to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia -- also stopped off Five Fathom Hole last Saturday, towing a 166-foot barge, Takaeer No. 4 .

They stopped to shorten the tow line and continued on hours later.

Meyer Agencies also reported that the Norfolk, Virginia-based Strong Kajun arrived on Monday with ten containers of general cargo for the US Navy at Marginal Wharf.

She left the next morning.

The container ship Oleander arrived on schedule on Monday with 160 containers, of which 126 were dry and 34 refrigerated.

The ship also brought in two trailers, one tractor and four cars.

She departed Bermuda on Tuesday morning.

One of two UK warships scheduled to visit the Island in connection with the Royal Navy's bicentennial, the HMS Broadsword , arrived in Hamilton yesterday.

The other warship, the HMS Monmouth -- one of the latest Type 23 frigates fitted with anti-surface and anti-aircraft missiles, was scheduled to arrive on Monday.

She will sail with the HMS Broadsword and the HMS Brambleleaf , the tanker for the West Indies Guardship on Monday afternoon.

To commemorate the bicentennial celebrations and the closure of HMS Malabar, which was scheduled for March 31, the Royal Marine Band of the Commando Training Centre in Devon, England will perform as an orchestra and dance band.

The band performed last night next to HMS Broadsword at No. 5 berth on Front Street along with a Beat Retreat, armed guard, and marching platoon by the crew.

Also the Royal Navy Bicentennial Parade will be held on Front Street at 11 a.m. with Governor Lord Waddington taking the salute.
