The British tall ship TS Astrid will make her once-a-year call to Bermuda this weekend.

Harnett and Richardson, local agents for the 100.9-foot training ship, yesterday said the Astrid was scheduled to arrive on Sunday and stay in Hamilton for four or five days.

The two-masted tall ship, sponsored by Her Royal Highness Princess Anne, is one of the last of a distinguished breed -- the brigantine -- and is used by the Astrid Trust, a charity set up in England to teach teenagers the techniques required to sail a tall ship.

Several Bermudian youngsters have taken part in the intensive training course that includes travelling on the high seas from the Caribbean via the Azores to England with only basic necessities.

The list of passengers was not available yesterday, a Harnett and Richardson spokeswoman said.

However, Rear Adm. Charles B. William was due to arrive on Saturday in connection with the Astrid visit.

Also scheduled to make a rare visit to the Island next week is the 710-passenger cruise ship Sea Princess .

Harnett and Richardson said the ship was scheduled to arrive from the US west coast on Sunday.

Weather permitting, she will berth at Dockyard at 9 a.m.

In case of inclement weather, the ship will berth in the Great Sound.

She is scheduled to leave for Southampton, England, on Sunday evening.

Other irregular callers included the Japanese car ship Chijin which arrived in local waters, from Haiti, yesterday.

Local agents for the ship, John S. Darrell, said she brought in 123 vehicles and 66 cases of spare parts.

Chijin , which anchored in Hamilton, was scheduled to leave for Nassau, Bahamas, yesterday.

John S. Darrell also reported the arrival of the regular Danish-flagged newsprint vessel, the Medallion .

The ship arrived from Canada on Tuesday with 288 tons of newsprint, including stock for The Royal Gazette .

She left Bermuda yesterday afternoon.

Container Ship Management reported that the container ship Oleander also left Bermuda earlier this week after unloading 141 dry containers, 40 refrigerated containers, a trailer truck, three cars, a tractor, a boat, some steel.

Meyer Agencies reported that the Bermuda Islander arrived ahead of schedule on Monday with 89 containers, including eight refrigerated containers.

She sailed on Tuesday afternoon.

The Somers Isles , however, arrived a day late on Tuesday due to bad weather she encountered upon her return to Florida last week.

This week she unloaded 99 containers, including four refrigerated containers and five boats.

She is scheduled to sail today.

The US Navy supply ship Strong Cajun was due to arrive today and berth at Marginal Wharf at the US Naval Base in St. George's.
