For USAir will accept stranded KIWI ticketholders at the ticketed KIWI fare on a standby basis.

A spokesman for KIWI's Bermuda agents, GSA, said: "Passengers need to show KIWI tickets to USAir at the airport and purchase a standby ticket.

"KIWI tickets should be retained by passengers -- advance reservations on USAir are available but at applicable USAir fares.'' The news comes three days after KIWI filed for bankruptcy protection in a US court.

The firm also suspended flights to five destinations -- including Bermuda -- leaving only services from its base in Newark, New Jersey, to Chicago and Atlanta.

The GSA spokesman added that an arrangement with Continental Airlines was still being thrashed out, but he said Continental will require passengers to buy tickets at the standard rate.

He said no special arrangements had been finalised with Delta or American Airlines -- although in the US, Delta has accepted KIWI tickets at face value in some cases.

The spokesman added: "All the provisions apply to passengers originating in Bermuda and the US and apply to unused and partially-used tickets.'' On Tuesday, The Royal Gazette revealed that worried KIWI ticketholders had contacted both GSA and local travel agents after the service to the Island was suspended.

Travel agents confirmed that some Bermudians were stuck abroad after Monday's announcement the KIWI was to slash services in a bid to keep the three-year-old cut-price carrier in the air.

Credit card buyers of KIWI tickets can get their cash back through travel agents.

But people who paid with cash or cheque will have to apply for a refund by sending tickets to KIWI's HQ in Newark.

The KIWI flights from Bermuda to Atlanta had already been suspended on a seasonal basis, but the flights to Newark were not due to stop until the end of this month.

GSA chief Graeme Seaton stressed in yesterday's edition of The Royal Gazette that KIWI had not folded and it was hoped the restructuring bid would be successful and the airline would begin operations from Bermuda again next year.
