Arch says cat losses could top $50m
Bermuda re/insurer Arch Capital Group Ltd. yesterday put its estimated net losses from last month's Chilean earthquake in the range of $35 million to $50 million.
Arch also estimated the combined effects of European Windstorm Xynthia and the Australian hailstorms and floods in an aggregate amount of less than $15 million.
Bermuda rival Argo Group International Holdings Ltd. said yesterday that first quarter catastrophes may cost $25 million to $35 million. The majority of losses are from the Chile earthquake.
Meanwhile, London-based insurer Amlin, which writes reinsurance business out of its Bermuda office, estimated its losses from the earthquake at between $142 million and $165 million.
In a statement, Amlin said its exposures are mainly within its international property catastrophe account. The London-based insurer said its directly insured and reinsured accounts are exposed to the quake, but that it still is difficult to estimate the losses at this stage.
"Given the substantial amount of reinsurance cover available for Amlin's direct insurance accounts, we believe that claims arising as a result of the earthquake will not have a significant effect on our expectations of their performance for this financial year," Amlin said in the statement.
Amlin added that it does not expect "material claims" from Windstorm Xynthia, which hit parts of Europe in late February.
