BA staff will not strike over Easter

LONDON (AP) — The union representing British Airways cabin crew said yesterday that it would not call a strike during the busy Easter holiday period in April.

Cabin crew represented by the Unite union will vote next week on whether to authorise a strike in their dispute with the airline about pay, job security and working conditions.

Unite has not announced date for a strike, if authorised, but media reports suggested that it would come during the holiday.

The airline went to court to successfully stop the union from striking during the Christmas travel period in December.

"It was never the intention of Unite and its BA cabin crew membership to call industrial action over Easter," said Len McCluskey, Unite's assistant general secretary.

He said the union was making the announcement so that holiday travellers could make plans.

Easter falls on April 4 this year, with public holidays both on the preceding Good Friday and the following Monday. Most schools take a break at Easter, making it a popular time for family travel.
