Bermuda Works: The Job
Julian Rose
Age: 44
Role: Head of sales, global markets, Bank of Bermuda HSBC
1) What is your job?
In global markets we run the bank's balance sheet and specialise in foreign exchange, fixed income and equity execution. On a daily basis I deal with clients in Bermuda, New York, London, Dublin, Geneva and elsewhere in the world who are looking to buy or sell treasury products.
2) What is your favourite part of the job?
The dealing room is a unique environment, at times it is very fast paced and stressful but it is also a great team atmosphere. It is the people I work with and the clients I service that make my job truly enjoyable. Every day is very different and you never know what is going to happen; if there is turmoil in the markets it's imperative that we react straight away.
3) What is your least favourite part of the job?
At times it can involve very long hours and starting early in the morning, but that is the nature of the business.
4) What is your most interesting experience at work?
I have recently returned from a six-month secondment in New York and London. While in New York I worked in several different areas in global banking and markets at HSBC, learning the full range of products and services that we can offer clients as we are expanding our capabilities here in Bermuda. In London, I worked in one of the largest dealing rooms in the world and spent a lot of time with top HSBC economists and research analysts in global markets.
5) What would you be doing otherwise?
When I was younger I always wanted to be a bookmaker. I guess much of what I do today is similar in dealing with numbers, facts and figures and trying to make sense of things quickly and under pressure.
