Bloomberg 10th on Forbes list
Bermuda is still a destination for the rich and famous as revealed by the Forbes 400 — the Richest People in America list.
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg leads the way for those with connections to the Island, coming in at number 10 in the magazine’s annual list of the US’s most wealthy individuals.
Mr. Bloomberg, 68, who owns a Tucker’s Town property and made his fortune through Bloomberg, was reported to have a net worth of $18 billion.
He was closely followed by the Johnsons — Abigail, 48, a resident of Boston, Massachusetts, who was named president of new unit Fidelity Personal, Workplace and Institutional Services in May and is worth $11.3 billion in 22nd place, and her father and founder of Fidelity Investments Edward (Ned) Johnson III, 80, also of Boston, in 33rd. Mr. Johnson helped to finance the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute and owns a home in Somerset.
Marion MacMillan Pictet represented the only Bermuda resident listed, came in at 79, with a net worth of $3.8 billion. The 77-year-old American and former owner of Perot’s Island is a descendant of William Cargill, who started with one grain elevator in post-Civil War Iowa.
Tucker’s Town property owner and Texas resident Ross Perot, 80, who ran unsuccessfully in two US general elections, holds 90th spot with $3.4 billion, having made his money in customer services and real estate.
Microsoft chief Bill Gates topped the whole list with a net worth of $54 billion, with Berkshire Hathaway’s Warren Buffett in second with $45 billion and Larry Ellison of Oracle taking third place with $27 billion.
Norwegian shipping magnate John Fredriksen, who owns a number of Bermuda-based shipping and oil-rig companies, remained the richest person in Norway this year after his wealth rose 30 percent to 60 billion kroner ($10 billion), an annual list by Kapital magazine revealed. Mr. Fredriksen, who became a citizen of Cyprus four years ago, is the largest shareholder in Seadrill Ltd., an offshore oil-rig company, oil-tanker company Frontline Ltd. as well as Marine Harvest ASA, the world’s biggest salmon farmer.
