British Airways completes delayed Heathrow Terminal 5 flights transfer
LONDON (Bloomberg) — British Airways Plc, Europe's third-largest carrier, will complete the transfer of flights to London Heathrow airport's Terminal 5 this week, six months behind schedule following the building's chaotic opening this year.
British Airways originally intended to complete the move from other Heathrow buildings to the £4.3 billion ($7.4 billion) terminal by April 30. The timing was revised after glitches in the baggage system and inadequate training led to more than 600 cancelled flights and thousands of misdirected bags when the terminal opened on March 27.
The number of flights serving Terminal 5 will rise to more than 500 a day from about 480 following the move on October 22, British Airways said in an e-mailed response to questions. Planes to destinations including Boston, Dubai and New Delhi will depart from Terminal 5 after the transfer.
British Airways shifted domestic and short-haul services to the concourse in March. The London-based airline estimated in April that the move's delays would cost it £16 million.
