Butterfield up 25%

The Royal Gazette / Bermuda Stock Exchange Index jumped 8.75 percent yesterday, as Butterfield Bank shares soared.

At the end of one of the most dramatic weeks in its recent history, which started with a $550 million capital raise, Butterfield gained 50 cents, or 25 percent, to close on $2.50.

Volume was extraordinarily high, as 721,763 of the bank's shares changed hands.

There was also some trading of the Bank's preference shares, with 110 changing hands, as the price remained unchanged on $1,200.

Another bank to gain market value was Bermuda Commercial Bank, which rose 13.3 percent.

A total of 8,200 BCB shares were traded, as the share price rose $1 to $8.50.

KeyTech saw its market value dip 15.1 percent on the trading of just 500 shares. The stock dropped $1.40 to $7.85.

The Index climbed almost 141.98 points to 1,764.88.

Volume was more than 736,000 and turnover topped $1.7 million when Bermuda and US dollar transactions were taken into account.
