CellularOne teams up with Nokia Siemens for 3G+ upgrade

CellularOne COO Frank Amaral

CellularOne has selected Nokia Siemens Networks to deploy its 3G+ network upgrade in the fourth quarter of 2010, enabling customers to enjoy advanced wireless data services.

Mobile phone users will also be able to download e-mails, browse the web and access data streaming applications faster on their mobile devices, the company said.

Nokia was chosen to deploy the HSPA+* or "3G+" technology as more commonly known, within CellularOne's existing 3G network to provide peak download speeds of 21 Mega bits per second (Mbps) and new features such as battery life extension for smartphones.

The upgrade builds on CellularOne's current network, which, the company claims, already offers the best 3G coverage Island-wide.

"With data use on the rise because of the popularity of smartphones and other 3G capable devices such as the iPad, CellularOne continues to evolve its network capabilities in order to provide the consumer with the best user experience possible on these mobile devices," said Frank Amaral, chief operating officer at CellularOne.

"Having successfully deployed our 3G network in May 2009, we once again chose Nokia Siemens Networks' HSPA+ technology as it is ideally suited and proven to deliver the next level of services for our customers."

Debra Florence, head of regional wireless business development, Nokia Siemens Networks, said: "Introduction of new technologies and services holds a key in making end users more happy and ensuring growth for operators.

"This deal reaffirms our position as CellularOne's preferred partner, while allowing the operator to continue as the premier service provider in the highly competitive Bermuda market."

The three-year agreement will see Nokia Siemens Networks provide a comprehensive portfolio of telecommunications equipment and services across radio access, core network and operational support systems. Professional services, including network optimisation and monitoring, as well as care services are a part of the contract.
