CFP profession is still making inroads
The profession of financial planning is still making in roads in Bermuda. However, there are only a handful of CFPs here.
In the early 1990s, the Financial Planning Association of Bermuda (FPAB) was founded by Jennifer Patterson CFP-US, in conjunction with Martha Myron CFP-US, both with Patterson Planners, along with Patrice Horner CFP-US, formerly of North Atlantic Asset Management Ltd., and with Diane Blais CFP-Cda of Barrington Investments Ltd.
Other CFP designates include Matthew Cairey CFP-Cda of Offshore Investments Ltd. Wayne Newhook CFP-Cda, of HSBC Wealth Management and Trevor Spinney CFP-Cda, of HSBC. There are several other individuals in Bermuda currently working toward their designation.
Financial planning covers many areas as they impact an individual's finances. A CFP practioner tends to develop an expertise and then liaise with other specialists as required such as lawyers or accountants. For example, Ms Patterson specialises in cross-broader planning, Ms Myron focuses on US taxation and estate planning, Ms Horner practices investment and retirement strategies, and Ms Blais concentrates on brokerage to build an investment plan. Mr. Cairney also works on investment plans. And Mr. Newhook specialises in the credit area. Full planning involves a team, with the CFP managing the members toward the best interest of the individual.
