Fairmont adds two more redundancies

Two more workers have been made redundant at the Fairmont Southampton Princess Resort, The Royal Gazette can reveal.

The hotel said yesterday it had also decided not to keep on two additional employees who had worked beyond retirement age.

This follows the announcement of 35 jobs cut by the four star hotel last month, which also said it would close half of its guest rooms until April and shut its restaurants on a rotating basis depending on occupancy rates, up to the summer season as the global economic crisis took effect.

Norm Mastalir, managing director of Fairmont Hotels & Resorts Bermuda, said the hotel was seeking alternative ways of attracting business from overseas, while working with Government on the domestic front to reduce costs and boost revenue to stave off the impact of the financial turmoil.

"The Fairmont Southampton is redoubling its efforts internationally to find alternate sources and markets for generating business," he said.

"We are also pursuing innovative partnerships with Government to reduce costs and increase revenue so we can weather the current economic situation and bolster tourism numbers for Bermuda.

"While seeking these solutions, we continue to organise the business to deal with economic realities. Payroll costs are being managed through attrition where we can, though regrettably, two additional positions at the hotel were made redundant last week.

"In addition, two other workers were extended accelerated retirement options. These decisions were made with great difficulty and our thanks go to the staff involved for their service to the hotel."
